FAQ
The dialog below will help you understand who we are and what we do. What are the top 5 "data vulnerabilities" and why should I be concerned? I know that we need to upgrade our corporate network…can we afford your services? Can I get support for my desktop computer from DPN? Q. What are the top 5 "data vulnerabilities" and why should I be concerned? top A. 1) Desktop computers exposed to the “outside world” (lack of firewall on corporate network). Many small to mid size businesses connect their network to the Internet directly though a high speed connection such as DSL or fractional T1 connections. This hardware is designed to pass traffic efficiently and many do not provide any sort of isolation from the "outside world". A dedicated firewall device with a secure OS can do a superior job of preventing malicious traffic from reaching internal computers. 2) Unsecured wireless access points. Wireless connectivity can make networks more convenient and flexible, but by default much of the off the shelf access point hardware is completely unsecured, broadcasting your intimate data to anyone who is listening. Utilizing WEP is mildly more secure and more robust steps may even be necessary to prevent intrusion. 3) Lack of internal access control to sensitive data. If you are just "sharing" your corporate data across a network, it is still susceptible to falling in the wrong hands. Frequently there is internal data that we prefer to keep segregated from different departments of the organization. Hourly laborers should not be able to view the accounting department's internal documents. Employees should not be able to access other employees' data. Engineering data should not be able to be accidentally deleted by management. By controlling access of internal data to the correct business groups, loss of data can be minimized and confidentiality can be maintained. 4) There is no data backup plan. If your data backup plan is to "burn a disk" occasionally, you might be quite aware of how inadequate this is when a hard drive fails. Routine, automated and complete backups can be made internally with an outstanding software called Arkeia. Additionally, in case of catastrophic loss...such as fire or flood, consider automated off-site backups to DPN's digital disk and tape library in a secure facility. 5) Non-functioning or improperly configured antivirus software. Viruses are continually mutating and have the potential to wreak havoc with unprotected computers and networks. These attacks can occur unbeknownst to users and administrators. A centrally managed antivirus system, setup correctly, can be the automated watchdog of your network. Q. I know that we need to upgrade our corporate network…can we afford your services? top A.
